中國歷史上最後一個封建王朝「清朝」的選妃制度相當嚴謹，據《清皇室四譜》中記載，清朝共有12名皇帝，而後宮嬪妃將近名，且每朝皇帝都謹遵三年一次的選秀大典，不過為何後宮要這麼頻繁的挑選年輕女子入宮？原來嬪妃侍寢有年齡限制。

後宮嬪妃最大的用處就是為皇家繁衍後代，而嬪妃為每晚皇帝侍寢的時間有限，因此「年紀輕」變成了一大侍寢條件，因為在古代，人們相信年過30生育能力會大大下降，且生出來的嬰兒夭折的機率較大。

且古人沒有現代人長壽，在古代，女子基本15、16歲大多數都已經論及婚嫁、生小孩，因此清朝後宮便有了三年一次選秀的傳統。不過若是皇帝獨寵某位嬪妃，即便已經年過30，只要皇帝一翻牌子仍可侍寢。
